Vung Vieng Fishing Village in Bai Tu Long Bay is among the best atraction of Halong Bay. There are 4 fishing villages in the World Heritage site: Ba Hang, Cua Van, Vung Vieng and Cap La. The Vung Vieng Village is the less touristy. Most of the junks and cruises would pass by one of these floating villages and would probably make a short stop at a fish farm to see daily life. Among many activities in the program, the one which is found to be the most enjoyable is the visit to the floating village.

After disembarking the big boat, you will be transfered by rowing boats, tender boats, or kayak to enter Vung Vieng fishing village. Some inhabitants can pick you up with a little bamboo boat and show you around their village. After entering the village gate, you will have the chance to experience the villagers’ daily life as well as the traditional culture and customs of the fishermen, who live in the World Heritage Area of Halong Bay.

Each fishing village has about 30 to 50 families with a population of around 200 – 600 people. These families have lived in the village for generations. Their language is Vietnamese. The village is a “floating village”. There are no structures built on land as most of the rock islands in the area are too poor to be cultivated. Daily life in the village is very hard and poor. Food and water are imported from the mainland; the main income is from fishing and tourism activities. They have a deal with the cruise companies who bring them tourists to paddle around their homes.

Their floating houses look spacious and clean. The well-off families even have tiled roof houses with radios, television sets, tables and chairs, etc. There is one community house here where villagers come to have meetings. Here, you can also stop to shop some traditional handmade items.

Visitors are stunned by the beauty of the fishing village : little houses on the water, houses tied together to defend against storms and typhoons, the simple and honest fishermen and the sunburnt faces of the innocent little children. It is all peaceful and charming.

Halong Paloma Cruise offers 2 days 1 night and 3days 2 nights trip to visit Vung Vieng fishing village, an unique path to observe local life on water.
